Three oldest hotels in Saigon

Continental Hotel, Majestic hotel, and Grand hotel have a history of hundreds of years and has welcomed many important people around the world.



The Continental Hotel was built by Pierre Cazeau in 1878, completed in 1880. Prior to 1970, the hotel was undergoing two reigns, the Duke of Montpensier (1911) and Corse's brother-in-law Mathieu Francini (1930). In the 1960s and 1970s, the hotel was called Mainland Lu. The hotel has hosted celebrities such as French novelist André Malraux, British writer Graham Greene - the author of Quiet American, Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, winner of the 1913 Nobel Prize. The Grand Hotel was built at 8 Dong Khoi Street in 1930, initially as a refreshing drink shop. Later, Henry Edouard Charigny de Lachevrotière, editor-in-chief of a French newspaper, obtained an official license to open Grand Hotel Saigon (Grand Hotel Saigon). In 1937, Grand was renamed Saigon Palace. In 1958, the hotel was named Saigon Lu Quan. Photo: Flickr.





In 1978, at 16 Ngo Duc Ke Street appeared another Saigon Palace. In 1989 two hotels at 8 Dong Khoi and 16 Ngo Duc Ke merged into Dong Khoi Hotel. Grand was renovated and renovated equipment until 1998, then re-opened and become one of the famous five-star hotel in Saigon. Picture: Phong Vinh.




The Majestic Hotel was built in 1925 at the corner of Catinat and Belgique, now the Dong Khoi and Ton Duc Thang streets. The work was designed by the French architect with the investment of the most affluent Vietnamese businessman of Saigon - Gia Dinh at the time. In 1965, the hotel was built two further floors under the renovation of architect Ngo Viet Thu. After being hit by a fire in 1975, the hotel was repaired by European Renaissance architecture in 1994. In 1997, Majestic was recognized by the Tourism Authority as a four star hotel, in 2007. 5 star standard. The hotel has received many important guests such as French President Mitterrand, Prince Akishino, Prince Henrick of Denmark, Prince Andrew of England, Princess Maha Chakri Thailand Sring Dhorn, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
